PARANOID VISIONS

"cryptic cross words"
Year:    2015
Country:   Ireland
City:    Dublin
Label:    Overground
Format:    CD
Tracks:    10
Time:    40 min.
Lyrical themes:    anarchism, pacifism
Genre:    rock
Style:            Avantgarde            Punk

Paranoid Visions formed in Dublin in 1981 and are Eire’s longest-running punk band. Cryptic Cross Words is the 5th album that Paranoid Visions have released since their 2006 reboot. Add to this the multitude of singles and a myriad of historical re-releases and compilations and it becomes clear that Paranoid Visions are a band who are not content to sit back and relax or attempt to trade on past glories. Indeed founder members Deko and P.A are of the opinion that there are no past glories with the recent releases being more reflective of what the band were about in the first place. Cryptic Cross Words, a culmination of a year’s recording and writing is an attempt to craft a specific album with a specific modus operandi. "With every release we have done, there has always been a compromise, and certain styles or genres we have wanted to explore have been almost achieved, but not executed the way we imagined them…until now". Switching rhythm section and losing a backing vocalist in early 2014 gave the band the opportunity to form the perfect line-up and create what the band believe is best album they have ever made. It’s certainly a more focussed and strategic release that relies on soundscapes and moods that co-exist with the various musical genres the band continues to dip into. But it explores these cohesively with production that has been described by one early reviewer as being "crisp but avoids the sheen of the nu”. Certainly this album owes as much to UK Decay as it does to UK Subs, or is “more magazine than fanzine". Lyrically the album is tackling different subjects ranging from the Catholic Churches abuse of children, invasion in the Ukraine, sexual harmony, working culture and the voice of the downtrodden public on the verge of snapping. In the case of Anagram Sam the lyrics consist entirely of anagrams (Anagram Sam, he’s one of those NAMELESS SALESMEN, his LIFE is a FILE of anagrams, he’s the SENATOR for TREASON etc etc….you get the picture!!) whilst the album’s closer, “baNAMA Republic” is a delicate slow building acoustic song spanning seven minutes and sung by Aoife Destruction detailing the fall of the Irish economy and the corruption that facilitated it.

PROPAGANDHI

"failed States"

Format:    CD , LP
Tracks:    12
Time:    38 min.
Lyrical themes:    anarchism,  pacifism
Genre:    rock
Style:            Punk            Prog Rock

We could to describe Propagandhi nowadays as a "prog punk" band formed in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1989 by guitarist Chris Hannah and drummer Jord Samolesky. Since the beggining they used to make songs more pop punk oriented in the 90s decade style as many bands from California, US and everywhere. But latest years Propagandhi risked to change 180 degrees its music style and to try to make more complicated structures, longer songs and mature lyrics, becoming in some kind of "prog punk", so a result to mix classic punk rock with other styles such as: progressive rock, post-hardcore, sludge and even heavy metal influences. The band already risked in "supporting caste" (2009) and repeat again its adventure in this "failed States", which is still farest than classic pop punk. Acclaimed for some ones or disappointed for other ones, is more than evident the great progression that Propagandhi has expiremented: high technical level, complicated structures, long songs and original lyrics with do not lost their attitude and principles. Perhaps not adequat for those lovers of classic melodic styles, but more than recommended for those who search new ideas, points of view and experimentations.

Lyrical themes:    anarchism, pacifism

"supporting caste" is the fifth full-length album by the punk rock band Propagandhi. It was released on March 10, 2009 through their own label "G7 Welcoming Committee Records" in Canada and US, "Hassle Records" in the UK and Europe. It is the first Propagandhi release with second guitarist David Guillas and the first not released on former longtime label Fat Wreck Chords. It is the third Propagandhi release on their own label. The album was recorded at The Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colorado. In part to stop or impede the leaking of the album, the band set up a page with an option to receive two high-quality songs from the album before release, by donating as little as $1 to one of three activist organizations supported by the band. This page also links to various pre-orders of the album. The band uploaded the entire album onto their MySpace page on March 3, 2009 for fans to hear ahead of its release. The album was critically acclaimed and was voted by punknews.org users as the best album of 2009. The excellent artwork is by Canadian artist Kent Monkman, entitled "The Triumph of Mischief". And both, artwork and lyrics are charged of political messages and vindications for different causes. Musically and lyrically continue to become in complicated forms and structures closer to prog rock, symphonic rock and even some kind of heavy metal. Truly original

LOU REED

"metal machine music"
Year:    1975
Country:    US
City:    New York
Label:    Universal Music
Format:    CD , LP
Tracks:    4
Time:    64 min.
Genre:    electronic
Style:            Noise

According to Reed (despite the original liner notes), the album entirely consists of guitar feedback played at different speeds. The two guitars were tuned in unusual ways and played with different reverb levels. He would then place the guitars in front of their amplifiers, and the feedback from the very large amps would vibrate the strings - the guitars were, effectively, playing themselves. He recorded the work on a four-track tape recorder in his New York apartment, mixing the four tracks for stereo. In its original form, each track occupied one side of an LP record and lasted exactly 16:01 minutes. The fourth side ended in a locked groove that caused the last 1.8 seconds of music to repeat endlessly. The rare 8-track tape version has no silence in between programs, so that it plays continuously without gaps on most players.

THE DEADBEATS

"deadbeats on parade"
Year:    1996
Country:    US
City:    Los Angeles
Label:    Sympathy For The Record Industry
Format:    CD
Tracks:    12
Time:    36 min.
Genre:    rock
Style:            Avantgarde            Punk

Great band in the classic Dangerhouse tradition which record nothing... and all at the same time: avant-garde, free jazz, punk rock, parody, new wave, prog rock and probably more things... Guitarist Geza-X had a solo career and worked as an ace rock producer. Pat Delaney (sax) would later be seen in Bpeople and Romans. They started in 1976 and disbanded two years later but reformed and recorded its old stuff plus new songs in this album entitled "deadbeats on parade" in 1996. Its music style is hard to describe moving from punk to jazz to new wave and even some kind of free improvisation and rare rhythmic section (drums, percussion. The band recorded a live concert one year later and a second studio album in 2016, on double vinyl and making complete free jazz, free improvisation and experimental music.

THE MEMBERS

"at the chelsea nightclub"
Year:    1979
Country:    UK
City:    London
Label:    Universal Music
Format:    CD , LP
Tracks:    16
Time:    45 min.
Genre:    rock
Style:            Avantgarde            Punk

The Members started in 1976 as another teenage band into the punk rock explosion late 70's decade, but quickly they incorporated to their music different elements, sounds and influences closer to reggae, funk, post-punk and new wave. With intelligent and original lyrics, sometimes about personal issues, sometimes about social issues, the band achieved their acclamed debut album in 1979 issued by label "Virgin Records" (Universal Music). With an ironical voice, few distorted guitars, original drums section and some kind of avantgarde style, The Members took the attention of public and medias during its first short period of activy, just until 1983. In 2007 the band come back and still active performing mostly for UK, Europe and US. They participaed in popular festival "Rock Against Racism" and other benefit concerts and events.

"1980: the choice is yours"
Year:    1980
Country:    UK
Label:    Universal Music
Format:    CD , LP
Tracks:    11
Time:    33 min.
Genre:    rock
Style:            New Wave

Perhaps a little bit less original than their debut, The Members recorded this second issue which it can to describe as a new wave album, in the sense here we can found several styles en vogue late 70s and early 80s such as: pop, reggae, ska, funk, post-punk, etc. It seem the best way to describe all of this mixture of music styles is using the word "new wave". The band continues with their intelligent lyrics and making live events for benefit concerts, solidarity events, etc.
